Range Oven Usage Guide
General tips for getting the best from your range oven and avoiding common faults, from Braintree Appliance Repairs.
Getting the best from your range oven
- Preheat before cooking and use an oven thermometer occasionally to check your ovens are holding the temperature you've set, as thermostats can drift over time.
- Clean spills once the oven has cooled — baked-on residue is harder to remove and can affect door seals and fan operation.
- If your range has gas burners, keep the burner caps and ports clean and free of food debris to maintain an even, blue flame — a yellow or uneven flame can indicate a blockage.
- Check door seals on all ovens periodically — with multiple ovens on one range, a worn seal on just one can significantly increase your energy use.
- Don't line oven bases with foil, as it can block vents and reflect heat onto elements or burners.
- Keep extractor filters clean if fitted above your range — grease build-up reduces extraction and is a fire risk.
Safety first
If you smell gas, hear a hissing sound, or a burner won't light properly, turn off the gas supply if it's safe to do so, ventilate the room, and call us. Never attempt gas appliance repairs yourself — always use a Gas Safe registered engineer.
If a fault persists after checking the above, it's usually down to a worn part rather than something you can fix at home — see Range Cooker Repairs.
